As many of you know, I am a member of Boston’s Chorus pro Musica and frequently collaborate with local orchestras in a variety of performances throughout the year. This week is uniquely special to me as I will not only be performing Beethoven’s 9th multiple times with the Boston Philharmonic in the impressive Symphony Hall, but because we are dedicating each performance to the victims and first responders of the tragic events that occurred in April during the 2013 Boston Marathon. Beethoven’s 9th was originally going to be performed in Symphony Hall On April 19th, 2013 but the city was shut down and the concert cancelled. Now five months later, Chorus pro Musica and the Boston Philharmonic have reconvened to put on, not only one, but three performances of Beethoven’s 9th for the residents of Boston. In attendance will be many victims and first responders of the tragic event who were invited to attend as special guests. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick even made an appearance on the first night showing his support for the concert and its cause. The first concert of the week occurred on Monday at 8pm in Symphony Hall and was truly inspiring. For those of you who know the piece, you know how moving this great work is. It takes you through many emotions, but when you get to the fourth movement, you could feel the excitement wash over the audience at the initial “Ode to Joy” theme! After the final movement came a resounding standing ovation with multiple rounds of applause for the wonderful soloists and collaboration of musicians on stage. If you’re looking for an inspirational performance this week, I highly recommend checking out the next performance this Thursday at Mechanics Hall in Worchester. There will be one final performance on Friday at Symphony Hall though tickets are already sold out! Hope to see you there.
