On the first Friday of every October, we celebrate Kids Music Day. Started by Keep Music Alive, an organization seeking to help more people realize the educational, therapeutic, and social benefits of playing music, this holiday aims to focus attention on the importance of including music education as part of children’s curriculum. This year will mark the 6th annual celebration of the event, with 5-Time Grammy winning bassist Victor Wooten serving as the official spokesman. Keep Music Alive partners with music schools, stores, and other music organizations around the world in order to support music education. They also enjoy the support of several celebrity ambassadors, including Julie Andrews, Richie Sambora, Sarah McLachlan, Jack Black, and Pat Benatar, among many others. At Encore, we are committed to supporting music education both at home and abroad, and believe it’s important to give back to our musical communities year-round. While most of the destinations participating in Kids Music Day are located in the United States in Canada, the holiday is now celebrated globally with events in Australia, Croatia, France, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Malta, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, Uganda, and the United Kingdom. If you are music educator or private instructor looking to celebrate Kids Music Day this year, we hope we can help provide some inspiration! Typical events include student performances, sing-a-longs, drum circles, instrument donation drives, offering free or reduced price music lessons, allowing a student to bring their friend to a lesson, and or even short-term discounts on lessons, instruments, and accessories. If you’re not in-person right now, there are also tons of online options as well. You can have live streamed performances or recitals, Facebook watch parties of a past concert, virtual workshops, music trivia, and so much more. If you have any other ideas ideas, please share them in the comment section below! There are participating locations throughout the country, but make sure to visit the Kids Music Day locator to find the event nearest to you.
